Italian Game
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4
The Italian Game is one of the oldest and most natural openings in chess. White develops the knight to f3 and the bishop to c4, immediately eyeing the weak f7 square and preparing to castle.
It is an ideal opening for improving players: every move follows opening principles — control the center, develop pieces, get the king safe — and the resulting middlegames teach you healthy positional habits without forcing memorization.
Key plans
- Castle early and connect your rooks.
- The Giuoco Piano (3...Bc5) leads to slow, strategic play; the Two Knights (3...Nf6) is sharper.
- Watch for the classic ...Na5 hitting your light-squared bishop.
